After zealous crusading for mass HPV vaccination by media, pressure goups, politicians and the medical establishment , the Irish Health Service last week commenced implementing an injection-by-Gardasil program for all 12 year old schoolgirls. Irish parents signed consent forms faster than media medical experts could hail this vaccine as 'terrific' .
Irish media etiquette forbids mentioning the flood of deaths and debilitating reactions reported in the US for Gardasil recipients. By Jun 2009 (only three years after it's approval), 47 deaths of girls & young women, along with over 12000 side effects had been reported to the FDA via the 'VAERS*' system (these incidents are probably greatly underreported*). So far, only two Gardasil related deaths have been reported in europe (from 1.5m recipients).
Merck recent track record
The recent track record of (Gardasil manufacturer) Merck does not render it unlikely that they would deny for years the dangers of an unsafe product, before finally being forced to pull it from the market (and then pay out billions in settlements). A record, incidentally, that does not exclude deceptive marketing tactics to play down a drug's health risks.And what of the top research professor , funded by Merck to design and conduct the Gardasil Clinical Safety Trials, who admitted it was not tested for effectiveness in younger girls under 16. "Giving it to 11-year-olds is a great big public health experiment " said Dr. Diane M. Harper, "At 11, these girls don't get cervical cancer - they won't know for 25 years if they will get cervical cancer. She also spoke about the need for 'more complete warnings' .
Public-Private Partnership
Despite fudged clinical trials lacking a true placebo, the CDC* and FDA^ fast-tracked it's approval in the US. They were approving a vaccine whose core technology had been co-invented and patented by researchers in the NIH (National Institute of Health), a sister agency of the CDC & FDA in the US Department of Health and Human Services. This technology had been licenced to Merck who then developed the vaccine. Dr. Julie Gerberding served as the Director of the CDC when it approved Gardasil. She is now the president of Merck Vaccines. Such revolving-door-culture occurrences between Regulation Agencies and Big Pharma companies raise questions on the credibility and independence of the vaccine approval process.
Three reasons why not to drink the Vacccine..(but injecting is 'safe')
The main Gardasil ingredients are- Sodium Borate (Active ingredient in Rat Poison, also known as Boric acid or Borax) - Polysorbate80 (Detergent known to cause cancer and infertility in animals) - Aluminum Adjuvant - (Cause of nerve cell death in brain, linked to autoimmune disorders) Sodium Borate (Borax) and cockroaches
The US National Institute of Health (NIH) recommends Borax (Sodium Borate) as a useful pesticide for Cockroaches: "If you have cabinets that drop down from the ceiling, place borax on top of them. The roaches will take the borax back to their nest, and it will kill the entire colony. (Note: keep borax away from children and pets, and do not place near food". The NIH website also has a list of symptoms for Sodium Borate poisoning which includes 'lack of desire to do anything' (which may explain the current sorry state of journalistic endeavor in the Irish media). This list also includes convulsions and coma.
Aluminum Adjuvants and mice
In the introduction to a University of British Columbia Study (Nov 2009) on aluminum adjuvant neurotoxicity in mice, the researchers note the urgency for such research: The absence of such studies is peculiar given the well known observation that aluminum in general can be neurotoxic under a number of conditions and adjuvants in particular have previously been implicated in neurological disease. The researchers then inject mice with the equivalent dose (based on body weight) of aluminium adjuvant as that of a human vaccine shot. They observe the following in the discussion of the results: The multiple aluminum hydroxide injections of experiment 2 showed profound effects on motor and other behaviours... Given the above, it is not surprising that aluminum has been widely proposed as a factor in neurodegenerative diseases and has been found in association with degenerating neurons in specific CNS regions....The demonstrated neurotoxicity of aluminum hydroxide and its relative ubiquity as an adjuvant suggest that greater scrutiny by the scientific community is warranted.
Polysorbate 80 - Anaphylactic Shock & Infertility
According to Annals of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (Dec 2005):Polysorbate 80 is a ubiquitously used solubilizing agent that can cause severe nonimmunologic anaphylactoid reactions. Polysorbate 80 (also know as Tween 80) can also cause infertility in rats. Over the course of one year (Jun 08 to Jun 09) there were 147 reported cases (from VAERs*) of 'spontaneous abortions' or miscarriages, when the vaccine was given to pregnant women in the US. Incidentally, the patent for a fertility impairing vaccine (for use in dogs and cats) lists Tween 80 as a 'preferable' ingredient.
Vaccinating 25 years too early?
The absurdity of this mass vaccination exercise is not lessened by the knowledge that the limited protection offered will probably have worn off decades before the age at whch these 12 year old girls are likely to be at risk of a cervical cancer diagnosis (on average, at age 44 in ireland).
The professor who headed up some of the Gardasil Clinical Trials (funded by Merck) admits as much in this 2007 article: "At 11, these girls don't get cervical cancer - they won't know for 25 years if they will get cervical cancer...A 12-year-old girl receives Gardasil®. We know that Gardasil® is an alum-based vaccine; we assume its efficacy will last for about 10 years because (1) HPV 18 antibody titers drop after 2 years, with a small decrease in efficacy for HPV 18-specific disease at 5 years, and (2) we know that most alum-based vaccines need boosters within 10 years. ...She will continue to need boosters and screening throughout her life in order to remain protected".
The HPV "causes" cancer angle..
The HPV vaccine pitch is as follows (example from the Irish HIQA** site 'Overview' on HPV vaccination): "Infection with the human papillomavirus (HPV) is the main cause of cervical cancer, without which cervical cancer does not arise". The perception created is that HPV by itself causes cancer. What is usually not emphasised is the following context related by the CDC's own HPV factsheet:"Most people with HPV do not develop symptoms or health problems from it. In 90% of cases, the body’s immune system clears HPV naturally within two years. The types of HPV that can cause genital warts are not the same as the types that can cause cancer. There is no way to know which people who get HPV will go on to develop cancer or other health problems".
So from this, can we say that HPV 'causes' cancer? To the impartial observer, it appears that HPV simply seems to be one of a number of 'co-factors' that need to be present in order for cancer to develop.
Indeed, this British Journal of Cancer study studies the effect of other possible factors including oral contraceptive use and smoking. SummaryIn summary, the hype around Gardasil has created a false sense of urgency about the need for a cancer vaccine for which the risk of developing the disease, let alone dying from it, is very low.
We know that this vaccination program itself (for 12 year olds) is unlikely to prevent a single case of cervical cancer as the recipients probably will require boosters later on to retain any effectiveness. In a tacit admission of this fact, the government sponsored Health Technology Assessment (on the Role of Vaccination against HPV in Reducing the Risk of Cervical Cancer) only ventures to make an estimate on number of lives saved in the context of vaccination in combination with (pap) screening.
We know from the post marketing Adverse Reaction reports that this Vaccine does not appear to be safe and that it should come as no surprise if we learn of some Irish schoolkids suffering post-Gardasil debilitating auto-immune diseases. We know that cutbacks in other essential Health Service areas (such as 24hr A&E service in some cities) will have to be made to find the funds for this non-essential vaccine program. And finally, we know there has been no impartial analysis done by the Irish media for the benefit of educating parents who wish to make an informed decision before signing a consent form.
*VAERS ('Vaccine adverse event report') is a postlicensure vaccine safety surveillance administered by the Food and Drug Administration and CDC.
